History of Traditional Kanjeevaram Sarees

A kanjeevaram saree is considered as the richest traditional saree of India. The sari is made with silk fabric which is developed in the kanchipuram region of Tamil Nadu, India. That is the reason the traditional name of this saris is Kanchipuram sarees. It is known as the southern equivalent of Benarasi sarees. Sarees from Kanchipuram have intense zari work on it. The zari used in the designing process comes from the state of Gujrat. According to Hindu mythology, silk is considered as the preferred fabric of Lord Vishnu.

Description of the Kanchipuram Silk Saree:


These sarees generally have three portions which are termed as Body, Border and Pallu. The border shades and the patterns are generally quite unusual from the body. If the Pallu has to be entwined in unusual colour, it is first individually twisted together and then gracefully joined to the saree.

Concept and Motifs:


Previously, designs were minimal and compact to traditional stripes or golden dots. Additional Motifs like sun, moon, peacocks, lions, coins, leaves are entwined into the sarees in patterns.
