Not only sarees, but lehenga cholis are worn during Indian wedding. In fact lehenga choli is one of the most beautiful traditional Indian wedding outfits. Till a few years ago, it was worn by the North Indian brides but now it is quite popular throughout the length and breadth of the country.
Lehenga choli, as a dress is very elaborate. Lot of rich fabric is used for stiching, adorned with a lot of heavy embroidery. This has a flowing effect making the shy bride look gorgeous and truly stunning.
There are three pieces to lehenga choli. They are the ankle length or (sometimes longer than that) skirt or the lehenga. The bustier or the blouse called choli. The length of the choli varies depending on individuals and then the most important part of the attire the dupatta or odhni a broad scarf or veil sometime measuring 3 meters to 4 meters. This is very intricately embroidered especially in case of a bride. While designing a lehenga choli three things have to be kept in mind, the colour scheme, embroidery and the neck style. Different neck styles in lehenga choli or salwar kameez can be used for the attire. Brides generally prefer a sweetheart a low neck. This enhances the heavy jewellery worn by the bride during the wedding. For other occasions, neck styles like halter, off shoulder etc can be used. Backless cholis look very elegant too.
Lehega cholis are for formal occasions so the finished look is very sophisticated. The materials used are usually silk, satin, chiffon, georgette or net. Nowadays women prefer a balance look. Traditional attire with contemporary look is the in thing. Some even go for mix and match outfits for a flamboyant look. Short cholis with intricately embroidered lehengas are the current trend. The embroidery depends on the demand of the occasion. A bridal lehenga choli has heavy embroidery whereas lehengas for others occasion might have lesser embroidery.
