This traditional attire is complete only when the three pieces, the  salwaar, kameez and the dupatta  come together. Salwar is the bottom of the outfit. It is a loose trouser. Traditionally it is wide from the top and has 4” belt attached to rest of the salwaar. The upper part of the belt has a tunnel for drawstring. Normally the salwaar size from top at waist area is almost double the actual waist size for a comfortable wear. Salwaar has big room at the thigh area for comfort. The circumference reduces at the ankle to give a proper fitting.

Kameez also known as kurta is normally long up to knee with broad circumference (Gher) and full sleeves. It is almost fully covered from the back with back neck style depth at 2-3″ and medium low at the front like 6-7″ inches. The head of the wearer easily slips into it. Dupatta, (the scarf, shawl, odhni or chunni) is third piece of this Salwar Kameez set. This is worn around head or neck…in olden times both Hindu and Muslim women covered their heads with the dupatta. Now the dupatta is simply a style accessory which can be worn over one shoulder or draped around to add to the elegance of the attire. Over the years this three piece garment has seen a sea of changes, sometimes the salwaar has became wide and sometimes tapered at the bottom. The length of the kameez is has been shorten to knee length and above and other times it is long and flowing till the ankle. Sleeves and neck styles see change every season. During summers kameez without sleeves and low cut neck styles are preferred while during the chilly winter, fully covered salwaar suits are in demand. Similarly a lot of creativity is shown in designing the dupatta. Depending on the look of the suit, the dupatta is designed. Which sometimes are wide and long and other times a narrow scarf, sometimes fully embroidered and sometimes just plain… The indo western suit has no dupatta.
