Today’s Indian women have crafted themselves into the westernized look and they have given the traditional salwaar kameez a more glamorized appeal. This traditional outfit has made a quick makeover with the rapid progression in its designing. The rich colour and embroidery can change any Salwaar kameez to a great super level fashionable garment. For this transition, we must thank the film industry, the designers experiment with the new look for every release. The films showcases the latest designs and neck styles of salwaar / churidaar kameez and the fans are quick enough to replicate the designs with minor changes according to individual preferences. Films have certain restrictions regarding its reach, so all the credit cannot be given to this industry alone, the television has a bigger reach; the latest trends which are showcased on the daily soaps are quickly copied by both young and old. The neck styles are called after the soaps or the actor adorned that particular outfit.

Salwaar Kameez is also a traditional dress worn by various peoples of south-central Asia. Salwaar kameez is the national dress for both men and women in Pakistan and Afganistan. Some time, salwaar is pronounced as Shalwar but basically both are referring to same garment. The word kameez is derived from the Latin word camisia meaning shirt or tunic, from which it probably made its way into various European languages (Chemise) and also into Arabic. The immediate source for the word kameez is Arabic.

Salwaar / churidaar kameez is an age old attire. It is coming down since the Mogul rule. The Mogul rulers wore Angrakha, or asymmetrical neck style long kameez . These were stitched in vibrant silks, brocades or tanchois with attractive neckline. The front panel and sleeves bottom were decorated with precious and semi precious stones.
